HistoryNCFH was formed in the summer of 1998 to respond to the potential mass eviction of over 300 families living in the Northside Associates Properties (formerly Northside Properties).
Northside Associates was a 300 plus units, scattered site HUD-Assisted rental housing development in the Northside Area of the City of Pittsburgh. Beginning in August 1998, Northside Associates began to reach the end of its 15-year Section 8 subsidy and low-income rental use restriction. At that time Northside Associates announced its intention to evict the residents and board the properties up until the use restriction expired in 2003. In response to the crisis the residents formed the Northside Coalition For Fair Housing and began collaborating with other stakeholders to arrive at a possible solution. NCFH is a non-profit, certified Community Housing Development Organization. With the capacity to create housing and economic development opportunities for low-wealth individuals and families in the Northside of Pittsburgh. NCFH has successfully driven a project to acquire ownership in the 324 Northside associates development. Our mission is to engage in activities that preserve the long-term affordability, quality and diversity of housing in the Pittsburgh Northside communities, while improving the quality of life for all Northside residents. The Northside Coalition mantra is “WE KNOW WE CAN.” We believe in our mission, and in the future, the possibilities and the gifts of our resident members. Our mantra is a reminder that Northside Coalition members will not fall victim to the stereotypes and low expectations implied by the type of housing in which we reside. Instead, NCFH members believe in our potential and our collective ability to achieve success in life, at home and in the community. TOGETHER, “WE KNOW WE CAN.”
